One gate for every opening

The tricky thing about most homes is that no two openings are the same. A rigid gate that fits the kitchen doorway will not fit at the bottom of the stairs and is of little use across a wide, open space.

Conventional pressure-mounted safety gates put a bar across the floor, right where you carry laundry, luggage or a small child. This gate has no bottom bar or swinging door.

The mesh extends from a slim housing on one side and hooks into a latch on the other. When you do not need it, release the latch and it retracts into the housing on its own. The passage becomes a normal passage again, which matters when the gate is only in place at night or during visits.

Safe for cats, dogs and children

The panel is taut, fine woven mesh rather than bars, so there is nowhere for a puppy to trap a paw or for a small child to use as a foothold.

1. Measure the opening at the height where the gate will be installed.
2. Hold the housing against one side and mark the screw holes using a level.
3. Drill the holes, insert the wall plugs and screw the housing into place.
4. Mark and install the latch bracket on the opposite side at the same height.
5. Extend the mesh and secure it in the latch.
6. Release the latch so the mesh retracts fully into the housing.
7. Check the fixings once a month, especially on plasterboard walls.
